Net Zero Isn't Constrained by Technology - It's Constrained by Labour

Utility-scale solar is no longer limited by ambition, capital, or engineering know-how. Increasingly, it's being constrained by something far more practical: labour availability and utilisation.

Across Australia, EPCs and construction contractors are already feeling the impact. Skilled workforce shortages are contributing to delayed schedules, rising costs and growing delivery risk. Internationally, bodies like the IEA and McKinsey have flagged the same issue - EPC capacity and construction labour are fast becoming the rate-limiting step for large-scale solar deployment globally.

The real challenge isn't just how many people we have. It's how effectively they're deployed.

Our own market research with Tier-1 and Tier-2 EPCs and mechanical contractors reveals a common theme: productivity data is fragmented, manual, and lagging reality on site. High workforce mobility, spreadsheet-driven reporting, disconnected tools and limited mobile capability all erode labour efficiency - especially on large, remote projects where every hour of lost coordination compounds.

If labour is now the critical constraint, then productivity becomes a decarbonisation enabler. Meeting net zero targets will increasingly depend on digital, mobile-first solutions that give real-time visibility of workforce deployment, construction progress and productivity - not months later in a report, but when decisions still matter.

The fastest path to net zero will require us building smarter, not just building more.
